Play Ink - Ink Play: Chinese Opera Ink Painting Exhibition

The Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University in collaboration with Art Department, University Galleries, and College of Arts and Communication will host an exhibition and symposium “Play Ink- Ink Play” that will include a Chinese painting mounting workshop and a Chinese painting demonstration especially for the CCAF festival.

The Chinese opera painting exhibition explains a special phenomenon of modern Chinese ink painting in a convincing way showing how Chinese artists tend to take opera as a specific object of sentiment and bestow it with freedom of expression. The exhibition displays the opera figure paintings created by some outstanding Chinese painters such as GUAN Liang, LIN Fengmian, HAN Yu, CHENG Shifa and DING Liren. Their works usually take into consideration cultural elements of opera as a theme to express themselves and their thoughts about life. There are also some artists using opera’s symbols to pursue renovation of the patterns of modern ink painting. The combination of opera and ink art brings more freedom of emotion and imagination not only to the painters but also to the audience.

The Liu Haisu Art Museum is a national art museum in Shanghai, China. The museum is named after Mr. LIU Haisu, one of the founders of the China New Art Movement in the beginning of the 20th century.
