This program is designed for experienced and certified teachers who hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, the student is eligible for New Jersey certification as a reading specialist.

Courses and Credit Requirements

This certificate requires 30 credits from the Reading Specialist, CERT, including:

  • 24 Credits in required courses including those covering foundations of literacy, curriculum design for young children, adolescents and adults, and diagnosis and remediation of reading problems.
  • 3 credits from a literature course (multiple options available)
  • 3 credits from an elective course, including options like emergent literacy, English Language Learners, recent trends, and ethnic and racial diversity.

August 1st: Fall semester
December 1st: Spring semester
May 1st: Summer session
*Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed on a space availability basis

Matriculation

Spring semester, Summer session, Fall semester

As part of the application process you will need:

  • A completed application (which can be done online)
  • $50 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges/universities

Admission Requirements

In addition to the University’s admission requirements:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.00 on 4.00 scale.
  • A standard teaching certificate.
  • Two years of contractual, supervised classroom teaching.
  • Record of Professional Experience (ROPE) form
