This program is designed for experienced and certified teachers who hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, the student is eligible for New Jersey certification as a reading specialist. Courses and Credit Requirements This certificate requires 30 credits from the Reading Specialist, CERT, including: 24 Credits in required courses including those covering foundations of literacy, curriculum design for young children, adolescents and adults, and diagnosis and remediation of reading problems. 3 credits from a literature course (multiple options available) 3 credits from an elective course, including options like emergent literacy, English Language Learners, recent trends, and ethnic and racial diversity.
