Muruku Waiguchu

The University mourns the passing of a member of the University community:

Muruku Waiguchu, retired professor of accounting and law, died on September 4, 2023. He was 87. Born in Kenya, he came to the United States in 1961, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Central College in Iowa, a master’s degree from Queens College, New York and a doctorate in public administration and comparative politics from Temple University. Professor Waiguchu joined the William Paterson faculty in 1970, where he served as chair of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies from 1973 to 1978 before moving to what was then the University’s School of Management in 1980 as a professor of accounting and law. During his tenure on campus, Professor Waiguchu served as faculty coordinator for a faculty mentoring program for Black and Hispanic students and initiated and directed a statewide job fair for graduating minority students at New Jersey colleges and universities. In 1983-84, he took a sabbatical leave to work in the office of the president of the Republic of Kenya. Following his retirement in 2006, Professor Waiguchu continued to teach, research, and supervise numerous dissertations at different colleges and universities in the U.S. and Kenya.
