Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi (1869-1948)

The foremost political and spiritual leader of India's struggle for independence and the outstanding theoretician of the practice of nonviolence and civil disobedience.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

An American writer famous for his essay Civil Disobedience, a transcendentalist philosopher, and a fervent opponent of slavery.

B. R. Ambedkar (1891-1956)

An Indian Buddhist activist and Dalit ("Untouchable") leader who led the struggle against the Indian caste system.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)

A key leader of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, who championed civil disobedience as a mean to achieve justice. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, was one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington, receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1968, he spoke out against the Vietnam war and was supporting poor African-American garbage workers when he was assassinated.

César Estrada Chávez (1927-1993)

A Mexican American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers.

Dolores Huerta (1930--)

A labor leader who, with César Chávez, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. She is an Honorary Chair of Democratic Socialists of America.
