Myths About Laptops and Why You Should Choose One Information Technology encourages William Paterson employees to consider the advantages of choosing a laptop next time they are eligible for a new computer under the Computer Replacement Program (CRP). Managed by Information Technology, the CRP refreshes primary computer equipment for full-time faculty and staff on a scheduled replacement cycle. Over the past few years, the CRP has offered employees the choice between a laptop or desktop computer for university computing needs. While a desktop computer may be the familiar choice, there are several benefits to laptops that may make them a better selection than a desktop. Below are some examples of the most common concerns that come up when someone is deciding between a laptop and a desktop. Myth: Desktop computers are faster. Reality: The standard CRP desktop and laptop computer options are configured by IT to have equivalent processor, memory, and storage specifications. Myth: Laptop screens are too small. Reality: The standard laptop option has a 14” screen, however the CRP also provides a docking station along with 22” monitor, keyboard, and mouse which allows the laptop to be used in an office setup that is identical to using a desktop. Myth: Laptops are heavy. Reality: Laptop weight and design have come a long way. The standard laptop weighs approximately 3.5 lbs. which is about the same as a half-gallon of milk! The biggest advantage to using a laptop is mobility. With ubiquitous wireless coverage on campus, a laptop can be used in meetings, classrooms, and in many common spaces. If you attend off-campus events, travel, or encounter a situation where you cannot make it to campus but need to access university work, having a laptop gives you the means to securely access your files or university systems from anywhere with internet access.
