Sgt. George Guzman Jr., Sgt. Lourens Latona, and Police Officer Javier Hernandez of the University’s Department of Public Safety, were recently honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), an organization that seeks to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking, while supporting law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to serve their community. The officers received a law enforcement distinguished service award certificate for their service and contributions to the prevention of driving while intoxicated.

The American Heart Association has named the University among the Top 25 in New Jersey school and education teams for the funds it raised as a participant in the 2011 National Wear Red Day earlier this year. The event was sponsored by the University’s Women’s Center and funds were collected during the annual Red Dress Dinner. William Paterson was the only university in the Top 25 and is in fourth place.

Ali Mir, marketing and management, presented lectures at Trinity College, Dublin, to mark the 100th anniversary of Faiz Ahmad Faiz, and the 150th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, both poets of the Indian subcontinent. Mir’s talk was based on his forthcoming book, The Poet as Revolutionary, coauthored with his brother Raza Mir, marketing and management. The book is a critical analysis of the work of Faiz, one of the greatest modern poets of the Urdu language. Ali Mir also presented two additional lectures at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and the National University of Ireland, Galway, on “Popular Culture as Mirror: Understanding Neoliberalization in India Through Bollywood Cinema.” The lectures were based on his research on Indian cinema, and his participation in the industry as a lyricist and writer.

Elizabeth Mullin, kinesiology, was recently designated a certified consultant by the Association for Sport Psychology, the international professional organization of sport and exercise psychology.

Danusha Goska, anthropology, was invited to present a lecture at “Polish Jewish Dialogue: A New Opening,” a conference held at Georgetown University. Her address was based on her recent prize-winning book Bieganski:The Brute Polak Sterotype, Its Role in Polish Jewish Relations and American Popular Culture.

Payton MacDonald, music, recently performed with the JACK Quartet and choreographer Alan Sener, at the University of Iowa and the Newman Center for Performing Arts in Denver. They presented a new work by MacDonald, Tongues in Trees for string quartet and percussion, and an arrangement of Gavin Bryar’s Sinking of the Titanic.

Sgt. Lynette Butler, coordinator of veterans affairs and mediation services at William Paterson University, has been appointed to a two-year term on the Operation College Promise (OCP) National Advisory Council. OCP was founded in 2008 by the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities. The organization offers outreach and educational support for student and alumni veterans in the post 9/11 era.
