Faculty and Student Highlights

The William Paterson University Sales Team, consisting of students Matthew Alston, Nicholas Cruz, Jared Helenic and Ashley Marfo, placed second at the Bayou Sales Challenge hosted by Nicholls State University in Louisiana.  On an individual basis, Helenic reached the semi-finals and Cruz won the Pressure Round competition.

Adonis Rivie, a biology major, earned a first place award for his poster presentation in the biological science category of the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM held in February in Washington, D.C.

Naa-Solo Tettey, public health, and students Sandra Carnegie and Emily Bieh-Mintah presented a poster, “Student Perspectives on Learning the Social Determinants of Health through Watching The Wire,” at the 7th Annual Health Equity and Social Justice Conference held in March 2015 at Teachers College, Columbia University. The poster won first place.

Members of the William Paterson Education Club, both students and alumni, recently volunteered at the Special Olympics New Jersey Northern Sectionals Basketball Competition. The club also recently raised money for Special Olympics by doing the Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights under the direction of Pam Brillante ’88, MEd '92, special education and counseling.

Robin Schwartz, art, was invited to post to the Smithsonian Magazine Instagram account for the week of March 21.  Schwartz posted images from her book, Amelia and the Animals.

Yuri Marder, marketing and public relations, is exhibiting his photographs, “Mother Tongues,” a commissioned series of portraits at the City Lore Gallery at 56 E. 1st St., New York City through April 16, 2015. Mother Tongues is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Tom Fallace, secondary and middle school education, published an article titled “The Savage Origins of Child-Centered Pedagogy, 1871-1913” in the American Education Research Journal.

An article by Angie Yoo, communication, titled “How U.S. State Tourism Offices Can Utilize Online Newsrooms and Social Media,” was included in the Social Science of Social Media Research Center of the Institute for Public Relations.

Bela Florenthal, marketing and management sciences, has won the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award from Beta Gamma Sigma, the premier honor society recognizing business excellence.

An Internet work by Keith Obadike, communication, is included in Come as You Are: Art of the 1990s, an exhibition on view at the Montclair Art Museum through May 17.

Nicole Davi, environmental science, was selected to participate in the ENGAGE Workshop from January 18-20, 2015 in Arlington, Virginia.  The primary focus of the workshop is to develop collaborations between geoscientists and geoscience education researchers.

Cesar Perez-Alvarez, marketing and management sciences, contributed an interview for a chapter on professional sales majors in the new book, They Teach That in College!? The book spotlights cutting-edge and majors.

Three College of Education faculty have authored articles for National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) journals. Triada Samaras, middle and secondary education, and Janis Strasser, elementary and early childhood education, co-authored “Using Collage to Encourage Creativity, High Level Thinking, and Conversation!” in Expressing creativity in preschool. Sue Mankiw, elementary and early childhood education, and Strasser co-authored “Tender Topics: Exploring Sensitive Issues with Young Children through Read Alouds,” in Exploring language and literacy in preschool.  Strasser also co-authored “Supporting Writing in Preschool,” in Exploring language and literacy in preschool.
