These and other questions from listeners are answered on Music Biz 101 & More, the weekly one-hour radio show on Brave New Radio WPSC 88.7 FM, the campus radio station. The program is unique because it’s believed to be the only show in the nation that offers free advice about the music business. “We started the show last year because I wanted to start a community service for musicians out there who have a million questions about the music business,” says Stephen Marcone, professor and director of the music management program. Marcone and Dave Philp, assistant professor, music management and popular music studies, host the show together with a student co-host. Listeners can tune in to the live show on 88.7 FM every Wednesday at 8 p.m., via the streaming website, or hear it anytime via podcast on Stitcher radio, which is downloadable on the program’s website. Guests include people like ACM Records founder Al Cohen, who talked about revenue streams for independent record labels, entrepreneurship in the music industry, and his lawsuit with the Academy of Country Music. Faculty member George Dassinger, a music industry public relations expert, explained how musicians can break through the noise and tell their story. Alumnus Aaron Van Duyne '75, MM '08, senior principal with Van Duyne, Bruno & Co. P.A., a certified public accounting firm for individuals and entities in the entertainment and sports industries, offered candid advice about business managers and how they differ from the personal, day-to-day manager. Van Duyne's clients include the rock bands KISS, Dave Matthews, the Rascals, and 3 Doors Down, and numerous professional athletes. Van Duyne also serves as chair of the William Paterson University Foundation. “Dave and I take call in's and tweets during the show,” says Marcone.
