Court Gallery
This exhibition highlights recent innovative artwork in varied media by the faculty of William Paterson University's Art Department.
A selection of recent artworks created by 18 members of the art faculty at William Paterson University in Wayne will be featured in an exhibition at the University Galleries in the Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts from October 31 through December 9, 2016. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on November 6 and 20, and December 4 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Sunday, November 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. A faculty panel discussion is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2 from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
The exhibition, in the Court Gallery, provides insight into the diverse artistic practices of the University’s art faculty, which includes painters, sculptors, printmakers, and designers. Works featured in the exhibit include examples of painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, collage, furniture design, photography, textile design and printmaking.
Michael Rees, professor of art and director of the Center for New Art, uses augmented reality to embed photographic images on his three-dimensional works. Using a smart phone or tablet, viewers are invited to interact with each piece, adding layers to the semiotic experience. In addition to his work in the Faculty Exhibition, 12 of Rees’s new sculptures will be on view at BravinLee programs in a solo exhibition titled Clown Town. This exhibition opens on October 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and will remain on view through November 23 at 526 West 26th Street, Suite 211 in New York City.
Robin Schwartz, associate professor of art at William Paterson University, was recently honored with a 2016 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for her distinguished achievements as a photographer. For the last 30 years, Schwartz has explored human and animal relationships in much of her work. Her photography was seen in the New York Times Magazine on Sunday, April 3, 2016 in a three-page feature about a tiny island in the Bahamas inhabited by pigs. In addition to the New York Times, Schwartz’s photographs have been published in Time Lightbox, The New Yorker, and O, the Oprah Magazine.
Elaine Lorenz, associate professor of art at William Paterson University, participated in the Sculptors Guild exhibition, American Twist, on Governor’s Island, N.Y. this past summer. She recently presented outdoor sculptures in the exhibition Spontaneous Generation at the Wildflower Sculpture Park in Maplewood, N.J. and Summer Sculpture Showcase 2016 at Sculpture Grounds in Old Lyme, CT. She will be exhibiting in a two-person show at The Carter Burden Gallery in Chelsea from May 18 - June 9, 2017.
Daryl Joseph Moore, professor of art and dean of the College of the Arts and Communication, lectured in graphic design this past summer at the Shanghai Institute of Technology and his poster, Thank You Shanghai, was featured in the School of Design’s faculty exhibition.
Other faculty artists included in the exhibition are Markam Keith Adams, Miriam Bisceglia, Kyle Coniglio, Barbara Friedman, Andrea Geller, David Horton, Rainy Lehrman, Charles Magistro, Gina Miccinilli, Leslie Nobler, Lily Prince, Lauren Razzore, Gerald Slota, and Thomas Uhlein.
The exhibition is one of two on view concurrently in the University Galleries. Collage Effects: Art of the African Diaspora, on view in the South and East Galleries, explores how techniques of collage and assemblage can be a means for rewriting history and reframing identity and representation.
