Ink, Press, Repeat 2013: National Juried Printmaking and Book Arts Exhibition

Ink, Press, Repeat 2013, a national juried exhibition of traditional and digital print media and book art by 32 professional artists from across the United States, will be on view at the William Paterson University Galleries from January 22 through February 15, 2013. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on February 3 and February 10 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Sunday, January 27, from 2 to 4 p.m.; in case of snow, the reception will be held on Sunday, February 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The exhibition, in the South and East Galleries of the University’s Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts, includes a variety of printmaking media, including woodcut, etching, monotype/monoprint, lithography, intaglio, silkscreen, and processes involving photography-derived imagery and digital collage. The exhibition was juried by Jacob Lewis, director of Pace Prints in Chelsea, New York. Lewis selected 43 artworks by 32 artists from more than 500 works submitted by 196 artists. The artists featured in the exhibition hail from 21 states.

According to Lewis, the exhibition showcases how printmaking as a medium has been transformed.  “Printmaking was once only thought of as a medium used to reproduce, in signed limited editions, popular images already created by artists,’ he explains.  “The works exhibited are examples of how the medium has evolved, becoming a mark-making tool with which to create original imagery.  As a printmaker, it has been an invigorating experience to jury an exhibition that presents the passion, risk-taking, patience, and reward of all printmaking processes.”

The grand-prize winner is Yuji Hiratsuka of Corvallis, Oregon, who will receive a solo exhibition in the University Galleries in 2014.  One of Hiratsuka’s winning works, which will be purchased by the University Galleries, is the intaglio “Beet Meets Meat.”

Other purchase prize recipients are David Avery of San Francisco, California; Paula Frisch of New York, New York; Jonathon Goebel of Bluffton, South Carolina; Robin Koss of Chatham, New Jersey; and Michelle Ray of Tallahassee, Florida. Honorable mention recipients are Meredith Setser of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Linda Whitney of Valley City, North Dakota.

Other artists in the exhibition are Douglas Barrett, Lori Biwer-Stewart, Marc Blumthal, Noah Breuer, Kristen Catlett, Kunyoung Chang, Tyrus Clutter, Diane Fine, Jenny Freestone, Kate Higley, Sueme Jeon, Ahni Kruger, Alan Larkin, Anthony Lazorko, Val Lucas, Stephen Magsig, Moira Mosley-Duffy, Alice O’Neill, Howard Paine, Sheila Pitt, Kasey Ramirez, Ellen Singer, Micah Snyder, and Joyce Ellen Weinstein.

Jacob Lewis has served as director of Pace Prints, Chelsea since 2007. He has initiated print projects with artists such as Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh, Leonardo Drew, Shepard Fairey, Ryan McGinness, and Wangechi Mutu. He has juried numerous exhibitions including the 26th Print Triennial (2010) and Print America (2009). He earned a B.F.A. from West Virginia University with a focus in painting and printmaking.

Ink, Press, Repeat 2013 is one of two exhibitions on view concurrently in the William Paterson University Galleries. On view in the Court Gallery is Katie Murken: The Forest for the Trees, a solo exhibition of recent work including a large-scale installation. Murken was the grand-prize winner of American Impressions 2012.
