Shiguang Qiao is a renowned master of Chinese lacquer painting, a pioneer of Chinese modern lacquer art, and one of the founders of modern lacquer painting. He graduated from China Central Academy of Craft Art and currently is a professor at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Council Member of China National Artists Association, and President of China Lacquer Painting Research Association. Qiao's works pay attention to the unification of lacquer and painting, which helps modern lacquer painting keep the traditional cultural character while making continuous innovation and becoming gradually independent of the tradition. He is thus acclaimed as the “father of modern Chinese lacquer painting." His representative lacquer paintings include The Water-Sprinkling Festival, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and The Plough.
Chinese lacquer painting has a long history that can be traced back to ancient China. It utilizes a natural painting material refined from the sap of a special kind of tree. Chinese lacquer painting is as famous as other unique inventions like the making of silk and honey; together they have been classified in Chinese history as the Chinese “Three Treasures.”
