04/30/2014

The Art Department and the Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University invites Xiaofu Yu, a famous Chinese artist and Vice President of the Shanghai Artists Association, to present an oil painting demonstration for the faculty and students as well as for the local community.

Xiaofu Yu is the Dean of Fine Arts College of Shanghai Normal University, as well as the Vice President of Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute. As a well-known Chinese contemporary painter, Yu attempts to integrate a human touch and idealistic thought into the color, composition, as well as the contours of his work. He is thus acclaimed as “a philosopher painter.”

In the art arena of China, Xiaofu Yu is an iconic figure for the so-called Shanghai School. Born and raised in Shanghai, he was trained in the Fine Arts Department of the Shanghai Theater Academy. In 1984, his painting Tenderly I Knocked on the Door created a nationwide sensation in the Chinese art world. Yu also won the Bronze medal of the Seventh National Art Exhibition in 1989, the Gold medal of the first Shanghai Art Exhibition in 2001, and the Silver medal of the Tenth National Art Exhibition in 2004.
