24-Hour College Radio Marathon Planned for Sixth Annual “College Radio Day” by William Paterson University’s WP 88.7 FM on Friday, November 4, 2016

--Hundreds of radio stations across the country and the world will celebrate the day with live programming

William Paterson University’s award-winning campus radio station, WP 88.7 FM Brave New Radio, will kick off its sixth annual College Radio Day on Friday, November 4, 2016. College Radio Day was developed and initiated by Rob Quicke, associate professor of communication and general manager of WP 88.7 FM.

Twenty-four hours of live college radio programming will start at 12:01 a.m. Every hour hundreds of college stations across the country will “pass the baton” to each other with special programs planned. The 2 p.m. hour is reserved for WP 88.7 FM to be simulcast on other stations.

Quicke, also the executive producer of the College Radio Day one-hour simulcast, will interview William Paterson University alumnus Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers. Other interviews with Sean Lennon, Grace Potter and Lee Loughnane, founder of the rock group Chicago, will also be featured, along with a special shout-out from Alanis Morissette.

WP 88.7 FM’s College Radio Day programing will feature the station’s first live music broadcast remote from the Meatlocker in Montclair. Other features include Quicke and Risa Pappas, station manager, with Paul Rotella, president/CEO of the New Jersey Broadcast Association, a Halloween radio drama at 7 p.m. written and directed by WP 88.7 FM music director Nick Machado of Kearny and a farewell to program director Eric Dargis at 11 p.m.

Other notable events of the day include an in-studio, student-driven interview with Glenn Schuck, a long-time metropolitan radio anchor currently with 1010 WINS. "I am truly excited to visit the William Paterson campus on College Radio Day November 4,” Schuck said. “I owe my career to college radio and jumping on air on WPSC to celebrate the day will be a thrill!”

During the last six years, College Radio Day has become an annual tradition on hundreds of college campuses across the country, and has attracted supporters such as Moby, Andrew WK, Coldplay and even President Obama. Since 2012, the event has become known internationally as World College Radio Day, with nearly 42 countries across around the world celebrating the occasion in their own cultures and languages.

College Radio Day was established to counter the trend of colleges and universities selling their radio station licenses, often valued in the millions of dollars. The aim of College Radio Day is to ask people to tune in to their local area college radio stations, support this unique programming, and underscore the importance and power of college radio to the universities and colleges they represent globally.
