Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Vocalist Catherine Russell to Perform Concert at William Paterson University on February 10 Celebrating Valentine’s Day

—Russell will appear two days before the 2017 Grammy Awards where she is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her CD “Harlem On My Mind”

Multiple Grammy Award-winning, internationally renowned jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell will return to William Paterson University in Wayne for a special concert in celebration of Valentine’s Day in Shea Center for Performing Arts on February 10, 2017, at 8 p.m. 

The performance is part of the WP Presents! Onstage Café series. Tickets are $60 for onstage seating with dinner and dessert buffet and an open beer and wine bar. Show-only concert tickets are $30. Russell, a native New Yorker, has performed on four continents and at countless international and national jazz festivals. In 2012, she won a Grammy Award for her appearance on the soundtrack for HBO’s hit TV series “Boardwalk Empire.” Russell’s latest recording “Harlem On My Mind” has been named as one of the “Best 50 Albums of 2016” in all genres by NPR Music and has been praised by numerous news sources like The New York Times.  

Born into jazz royalty, Russell’s father, Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s musical director, and her Juilliard-trained mother, Carline Ray, was a well-known bassist and vocalist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Russell is a veteran of bands led by Steely Dan, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm and Rosanne Cash. Her ability to sing virtually anything has led to her acclaim as one of the greatest interpreters of the American popular song.
