"Passionately Vocal, Seriously Local" is the Theme for 24-Hour Marathon Planned for Seventh Annual College Radio Day by WP 88.7 FM on Friday, October 6, 2017

William Paterson University’s award-winning campus radio station, WP 88.7 FM Brave New Radio, will kick off its seventh annual College Radio Day on Friday, October 6, 2017 with the theme of “Passionately Vocal, Seriously Local.” It will include recognition from radio industry professionals such as Elvis Duran, Glenn Beck, Little Steven, Jim Kerr, Eddie Trunk, Shelley Wade and more. The event is also part of a “World College Radio Day” marathon being held that day.

“Once again our students will go without sleep to passionately celebrate this international event. I am excited to hear the great programming they will produce for this special celebration of college radio,” says Rob Quicke, associate professor of communication and general manager of WP 88.7 FM, who developed and initiated College Radio Day.

Twenty-four hours of live college radio programming will begin at 12:01 a.m. on WP 88.7 FM. William Paterson student DJs plan to air special shows for the event by selecting music that supports local artists in the community. Every hour hundreds of college stations across the country will “pass the baton” to each other with special programs planned. WP 88.7 FM will also host three local bands, Absolute Zeroes, Cabbage Platter and ITO, set to perform at Sticks and Stones in Hawthorne, NJ starting at 10 p.m.

Sebastian Escobar ’15, WP 88.7 station manager, will debut a special radio feature about his recent trip to Mexico as a volunteer to help victims of the September 19 earthquake at 1 p.m., during the one hour slot of the global marathon.

College Radio Day was established to counter the trend of colleges and universities selling their radio station licenses, often valued in the millions of dollars. The aim of College Radio Day is to ask people to tune in to their local area college radio stations, support this unique programming, and underscore the importance and power of college radio to the universities and colleges they represent globally.
