First brought to fame as the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, artist and designer Maya Lin – recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and National Medal of Arts – will speak at William Paterson University on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the institution’s 39th season of the Distinguished Lecturer Series.
Lin will discuss the intersection of art and architecture, and how she balances the two by interpreting the natural world through science, history, politics and culture. Her art – the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide including the National Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Smithsonian Institution – explores how people experience and relate to nature. Lin’s interest in landscape has led to artworks influenced by topographies and natural phenomena.
Her memorials, which make history a part of the landscape, include the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, the Civil Rights Memorial in Alabama and the Women’s Table at Yale.
Lin’s non-memorial architectural projects include the Museum for Chinese America in New York, the main building for Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts, and the Riggio-Lynch Interfaith Chapel and Language Hughes Library, both in Tennessee.
