University Music Department Presents Purcell’s Opera “Dido and Aeneas” on April 13 and 14

The William Paterson University Music Department will present Henry Purcell’s opera, “Dido and Aeneas” on April 13 and 14, 2018, at 8 p.m. at the University in Wayne. The opera will be presented as a fully staged performance in the Shea Center for Performing Arts, room 101, on campus.

Purcell’s masterpiece about love and war is the ancient story of Dido, queen of Carthage, and her despair that follows after she is abandoned by the Trojan prince Aeneas. The production will feature a Baroque period string quartet and harpsichord.

The one-hour performance is directed by William Paterson voice professor and professional singer, Christopher Herbert of Brooklyn.Lois Buesser of Boonton will conduct. Daniel Lopez of Wethersfield, Conn., serves as assistant director and choreographer.

The cast includes: Brinley Edwards of Cape May Court House as Belinda; Lisa Bremer of Pompton Plains as Dido; Paige Inglese of Hawthorne as Second Woman; Joshua Martinez of Passaic as Aeneas; Alyssa Warner of Beacon, N.Y., as the Sorceress; Brianna Orfan of Old Bridge as First Witch; Dina O'Reilly of Edgewater Park as Second Witch; Loki DeAngelis of Dumont as Spirit; and Matthew Moretta of Dover as Sailor. The ensemble includes: Cardarious Bonner of Fort Worth, Texas; Africa Gray of Paterson; Christopher Lewis of Trenton; Georgina Reid of Hackensack; Alyssa Robbins of Wayne; Crystal Sotiropoulos of Vineland; and the WP Chamber Choir.

The opera is remembered as Purcell’s best work and is recognized as “one of the most beloved operas in the repertory” (The New York Times) that schools and colleges perform worldwide.Admission prices for this performance are $15 for the general public, $10 for the William Paterson community and senior citizens, and free for WP students with ID.
