William Paterson Presents Explorations 2018: Research, Scholarship, and Creative Expression Across All Academic Disciplines During April

Highlights include 12th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental and Health Sciences on Saturday, April 14

Explorations 2018: Research, Scholarship and Creative Expression, a presentation of research, scholarly and creative work across all five colleges at William Paterson University in Wayne, will be held during April 2018. Events include lectures, presentations of faculty and student research and awards, Honors Week student presentations, a faculty authors’ celebration and poster sessions.

“We are proud to offer this forum for undergraduate students to participate in activities with faculty, providing experiences that often contribute to career success and advanced studies,” says Warren Sandmann, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “Explorations 2018 provides an opportunity for us to celebrate their many accomplishments with several important events.”

On Saturday, April 14, the 12th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held, an annual forum for undergraduates from the tri-state region. More than 100 undergraduate science students and faculty from nearly 30 colleges throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania will present their research during this symposium. The range of subject matter includes the behavioral, ecological, environmental, and health sciences, as well as biology and chemistry.

The Honors Week Student Research Presentations will be held from Tuesday, April 17 to Thursday, April 19, in University Commons 168 A/B, showcasing the work of students completing one of the University’s Honors College tracks and recognizing the faculty and staff who contribute to their success. On Tuesday, April 17, from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be presentations by students in the Honors Performing and Literary Arts track in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium.

From April 10 through 18, there will be presentations by faculty that are sponsored by all five colleges and other programs, and interdisciplinary poster sessions on research by undergraduate and master’s degree students as well as faculty on April 10 in Science Hall Lounge and on April 12 in University Commons, Ballrooms Band C.

Other highlights include an author’s reception in the Cheng Library on Thursday, April 12, and “Paterson Through the Arts,” presented by the University’s Paterson Metropolitan Regional Research Center in the Atrium Auditorium on Friday, April 13.

On Tuesday, April 17, Venkat Sharma, dean of the College of Science and Health, will give a presentation on the value of research in a regional comprehensive university as part of experiential learning, from 12:30 to 1:45 in University Commons Ballroom A.

Sonic Divide, a documentary that chronicles William Paterson music professor Payton MacDonald’s June 2016 mountain bike trip along the U.S. Continental Divide, will be shown on Wednesday, April 18, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium.

Other programs related to research, scholarship and creative expression include the Annual Spring Writer’s Conference on Saturday, April 14 in the University Commons Multipurpose Room and Mathematics Awareness Week 2018 featuring capstone projects from Monday, April 23 to Friday, April 27,  in Science Hall East 3037, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
