How does power affect gender roles and sexual behavior in public and private spaces? Who has power, who does not, and how is it leveraged? Such are the questions that will be discussed during a day-long conference at William Paterson University in Wayne, “When We Speak: Sex, Power, and the #MeToo Movement,” on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018.
The event, which will take place in the University Commons Ballroom, is free and open to the public and media
The conference is divided into three sessions in which multiple speakers will address the complex issues of desire, power, and justice. The keynote session, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., features Julianne Malveaux – labor economist, noted media writer and commentator, and former president of Bennet College for Women
The morning session, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., will focus on the history of the #MeToo era, as presented by author and Yale University Assistant Professor of American Studies Greta LaFleur, as well as Durba Mitra, Harvard University Professor of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
The afternoon panel discussion, from 2 to 3:15 p.m., looks to the future of the #MeToo movement and measuring its “success.” Panelists including Mariam Durrani, author and CUNY Graduate Center professor of anthropology, and Bianca Williams, Hamilton College assistant professor of anthropology.
