Alan Hicks ’07 wins “Best Music Film” Grammy for Quincy with Rashida Jones and Paula DuPré

Alan Hicks ’07, William Paterson University jazz studies alum, won a Grammy Award for “Best Music Film” as co-writer and co-director forQuincy, the 2018 American documentary film about the life of American record producer, singer and film producer, Quincy Jones. Jones’s daughter, Rashida Jones was the co-writer and co-director and Paula DuPré produced the film. The trio accepted the 2019 Grammy award from “Best Music Film” on Sunday, February 10, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Other nominated films in the Music Film category included Life in 12 Bars, Whitney, Itzhak and The King.

Hicks, a drummer and native of Australia who graduated from William Paterson with a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies, won recognition and multiple awards for his 2014 documentary Keep On Keepin’ On. The film spotlighted the poignant relationship between the late Clark Terry, jazz legend and William Paterson University permanent artist-in-residence, and his former student and Hicks’s classmate Justin Kauflin ’08.

Quincy was released by Netflix on Sept. 21, 2018.
