The William Paterson University Music Department will present W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance, on April 12 and 13, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the University in Wayne. The opera will be presented as a fully staged performance with pit orchestra in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.
The Pirates of Penzance is an 1879 comic opera in two acts and the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration. It introduced the much-parodied “Major-General’s Song” and other popular tunes. The zany plot follows a young man who is mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate. Conflict ensues and madcap madness abounds, but love wins in the end. The Pirates of Penzance remains popular, taking its place along with The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore as one of the most frequently played Gilbert and Sullivan scores.
The performance is produced by Christopher Dylan Herbert, William Paterson vocal program coordinator. The stage director is Phillip Sprayberry, William Paterson media relations coordinator and adjunct faculty. Lois Buesser, William Paterson accompanist and vocal coach, will conduct. Samara Grossman, MetroWest Jewish Center producing artistic director, will choreograph.
The cast includes: Gwynne Stevenson of Thousand Oaks, Calif., as Mabel; Lauren D’Imperio of Bergenfield as Edith; Janais Martinez of Passaic as Kate; Khyriyyah Abdul-Haqq of East Orange as Isabel; Bridget Maresca of Fair Lawn as Ruth; Daniel Lopez of Wethersfield, Conn., as Frederic; Tiernan Doyle of Sparta as the Pirate King; Jake Newton of Pompton Lakes as Major General; Dominick Wood of Norwalk, Conn., as the Sergeant; and Loki DeAngelis of Dumont as Samuel. The ensemble includes: Xavier Bonilla of Belleville; Olivia Clifford of Rockaway; Stephanie El-Khoury of Hackettstown; Darian Florence of Teaneck; June Fortugaleza of Haskell; Stephen Giercyk of Lake Hiawatha; Paige Inglese of Hawthorne; Alexandre Mariano of Fair Lawn; Joshua Martinez of Passaic; Brenna Moran of Wayne; Matthew Kerr of Ringwood; Ethan Kimball of Vernon; Mary Moynihan of Mount Laurel; Erene Olson of Sayreville; Brendan Orfan of Old Bridge; Stephen Taesler of Hopatcong; and Pam Urgiles of Newark.
