-- Speakers to include John Bunn, founder of A Voice for the Unheard-- Event is part of commemoration of National Public Health Week
“Moving Beyond the Bars,” a panel discussion on criminal justice reform, will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 12:15 p.m. in the Cheng Library auditorium on campus. The event is part of the University’s commemoration of National Public Health Week.
“Mass incarceration is one of the greatest public health challenges facing the United States today and a major contributing factor to health disparities,” Naa-Solo Tettey, William Paterson University assistant professor of public health said. “Involving students in the criminal justice reform movement is vital for creating positive change.”
The panel will include: John Bunn, who was wrongfully convicted of murder and now, as the founder of A Voice for the Unheard, donates books to prisons to increase literacy rates; Nerika Jenkins, a May 2018 graduate of William Paterson who spent 11 years behind bars as a result of her then-boyfriend’s drug dealing and is in the process of founding a non-profit in Newark and in Georgia, A Woman’s Worth, to help incarcerated women transition back into society; Marvin Mayfield, a member of Just Leadership USA and a leader in the New York City bail reform movement; and Jada Fulmore, director of the Passaic County office of New Jersey Reentry, which works to remove barriers to employment for court-involved individuals.
In connection with the event, students, faculty and staff have collected more than 500 books that will be donated to A Voice for the Unheard.
The event is sponsored by the University’s Public Health Club, and co-sponsored by the Department of Public Health and Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.
