William Paterson University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences will hold its second annual career readiness program, “Aspire,” tailored to students with majors in the College, on August 14 and 15, 2019.
“The idea for the Aspire program developed out of a desire to provide our College’s students with real-life preparation for the workforce,” says Wartyna Davis, interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “Our students will have an opportunity to engage with employers and alumni on how to use their majors to cultivate success. Students will be given opportunities to talk about the skills acquired as humanities and social science majors, craft their personal brand, and learn the importance of networking.”
The event kicks off on Wednesday, August 14 in University Commons Ballroom at 8:30 a.m. with a full docket of on-campus activities. Mary Alice Barrows, assistant director of the University Career Center, will discuss career competencies and online profiles, and Deborah Sheffield, academic advisor for the College, will discuss the students’ Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test results and how to use that understanding to foster better working relationships. Marc Schaeffer, retired administrator at William Paterson and member of the College’s Dean’s Advisory Board, will discuss how to network with alumni.
The next day, August 15, students will travel to ADP’s Roseland, New Jersey offices for an employee panel featuring leaders from local corporations, a talk with the ADP human resources team, and a Q&A with guest panelists. Blair Bravo ‘95, chief executive director, Morris Habitat for Humanity and a member of the College’s Dean’s Advisory Board, will be on the alumni panel. Other speakers include Melissa A. Honohan, senior manager, Alliance Advocacy, and Lorena Ramos, regional manager, Toyota Motor North America.
