Saul Flores, who walked 5,238 miles through ten countries to document how dangerous the journey of immigrants to the United States can be, will be the opening keynote speaker for Latinx Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation on Tuesday, October 22, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Machuga Student Center Multipurpose Room.
The themed celebration will feature a variety of lectures, discussions and campus activities held during October to celebrate Latinx Americans.
On Wednesday, October 23 at 9 a.m., a Latinx commuter breakfast will be held in University Commons 171AB. At 2 p.m., Professors Keumjae Park, sociology, and Fanny Lauby, political science, will give a historical perspective on “U.S. Immigration Policies and Family Separation” in the Cheng Library Auditorium. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a Latinx student, faculty, and staff mixer in the Starbucks Café.
On Thursday, October 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Starbucks Café, there will be a Willy Ricans Poets cafe featuring Caridad de La Luz "La Bruja,” a well-known spoken word poet, activist, actress, and singer in New York City.
Other highlights include a Pioneer Café Salsa Night on Friday, October 25 in the Machuga Student Center Multipurpose Room from 8 to 10 p.m. and a Latinx Self Care Space with the Peer Health Advocates on Monday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..
Also on Monday, October 28 at 11 a.m. the Cheng Library Auditorium, Sue Kenney, a volunteer with an immigrants’ rights advocacy group, will speak about “Immigration, Policy and Compassion.”
A discussion about LGBTQA and the Latinx community will be held on Wednesday, October 30 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the University Commons 216.
