William Paterson University junior Laryssa Durschlag, a volunteer at the campus Pioneer Food Pantry, won the NJ Campus Compact’s Changebuilder Scholar Award for being passionate about serving those with food insecurities.

Durschlag, a communication major, has been working in the Pioneer Food Pantry since 2018. “It is a passion of mine because I care about helping others,” she says. “I lived on food stamps in high school and saw how people struggle. I want to make sure that those who visit the pantry have access to everything they need.”

At the pantry, she organizes and sorts the food, and bags items for those in need. “I want to make sure the students, whether residential or commuters, can bring food to their table,” she adds. Durschlag encourages fellow Pioneers who need resources to use the Pioneer Food Pantry.

Durschlag also won the 2020 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows Award for civic engagement.
