Tiernan P. Doyle ‘21 Holds Internship at NASA, is Ready to Launch a Career in Broadcasting or Public Relations

Tiernan P. Doyle '21

Honors College student Tiernan P. Doyle of Sparta, NJ graduated summa cum laude this May with a BA degree in communication with concentrations in broadcast journalism and public relations.

When it came to his experience at William Paterson, it was all about learning as much as he could. “I didn’t let my major hold me back in terms of which classes I wanted to take or which clubs I wanted to be a part of,” says Doyle.

It was that “cast a wide net” philosophy that inspired Doyle to take a general astronomy course in his freshman year, become an opera singer in the music department’s presentation of in the Pirates of Penzance in his sophomore year, and take a meteorology course in his junior year.

In January 2021, Doyle began an internship with NASA as a virtual multimedia specialist intern for the Low Boom Flight Demonstration mission, located at NASA’s Langley Research Center, where he’ll continue working through this summer. In this role, he helps to produce media content about the mission, from editing to pre-planning.

As a freshman, he used his ham radio expertise to participate in three volunteer trips to the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, to help with recovery from Hurricane Maria. While there, he helped to assemble a HAM radio station designed for providing emergency communications throughout the island.

During his years on campus, Doyle was music director of the WPSC-FM 88.7 Brave New Radio station, serving as leader of digital and integration, on-air talent, and live sound team. He was the winner of an Intercollegiate Broadcast Award for “best specialty music show,” and nominated for “most creative/innovative show.

He was also active with the WPTV television station, serving as treasurer, public relations producer, news and script writer and on-air talent.

Doyle plans to pursue a career in broadcasting and/or public relations. “I wanted to get the full experience from these four years, and I was able to accomplish that goal,” he says. “From helping out in Puerto Rico to the Opera, to my work at the tv and radio stations, I’m proud that I was able to represent my school and gain the most enjoyment from my four years at William Paterson.“
