College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to Present “Contexts,” the 10th Annual Multidisciplinary Conference, Focusing on Topic of Higher Education in a Post-Pandemic World

--This year’s virtual conference, titled ‘Imagining and Reinventing Higher Education in a Post-Pandemic World,” features Henry Armand Giroux, Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University, as keynote speaker

How should those in colleges and universities evaluate and adjust their approach to higher education in a post-pandemic world? A day-long multidisciplinary virtual conference presented by William Paterson University will explore that topic on Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“Contexts” is an annual conference that features experts across multiple fields bringing together different disciplines within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at William Paterson.

“Faculty and students from across the college collaborate and focus on a generative theme,'' says Ian Marshall, associate dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. “While students are the primary audience, the conference draws faculty, staff, administrators, and people from the local community who find the conference both engaging and educational.”

The virtual event is divided into two panel sessions and a keynote address.

The morning session, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., features “Understanding the Pre-Pandemic Challenges to Educating the Whole Human.” This presentation will feature Carmen Kynard, Lillian Radford Chair in Rhetoric and Composition and professor of English at Texas Christian University, and Jyl Josephson, professor of political science and women’s and gender studies at Rutgers University-Newark.

The keynote address, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., “Apartheid Pedagogy in the Age of Rising Authoritarianism: Challenges and Possibilities,” will be given by Henry Armand Giroux, Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University.

The final session, from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m., will be “Packing the Post-Pandemic Toolkit.” Speakers include Carlton Green, director of diversity training and education at the University of Maryland, and Carlos Martin-Rios, associate professor at the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland.
