WP Jazz Orchestra and Student Ensembles to Perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York City on March 22


The William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra and two student jazz ensembles will perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola/Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 with sets at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., respectively.

Grammy-winning trumpeter Randy Brecker will join the WP Jazz Orchestra as guest soloist. The set will include arrangements of two of Brecker's compositions by graduating master’s arranging students Thomas Avella of Stony Brook, NY, and Raymond Doell of Auckland, New Zealand, as well as music featured on Brecker’s recent performance with the orchestra on campus as part of the Jazz Room series. The group is under the direction of David Demsey, professor of music professor and coordinator of jazz studies.

The two student ensembles are among the jazz studies program’s 24 small ensembles. One group, directed by Jazz Studies Program director and internationally known jazz pianist Bill Charlap, will perform the music of Bud Powell; the other ensemble, directed by saxophonist, composer, and adjunct faculty member Vincent Herring, will perform the music of Cannonball Adderley.

The WP Jazz Orchestra features Thomas Avella, Stony Brook, NY, and Dan Leschinsky, Wayne, on alto saxophone; Ben Lindenburg, Seattle, WA, and Joe Foglia, Raleigh, NC, on tenor saxophone; Matt Gandelman, New City, NY, on baritone saxophone; Angelina Cirovic, Wayne, on bass clarinet; Sean Hack, Maplewood, Jon Gittings, Cranberry, Dakarai Barclay, Chicago, IL, Ernest Royeppen, Cape Town, South Africa, and Adriana Marquez Enriquez, Dover, on trumpet; Richard LaRouech, East Aurora, NY, Rayner Perez, Newark, and Adam Davy, Williamsburg, VA, on trombone; Dave Montgomerie, Freehold, on bass trombone; Elliot Bernard, Leesburg, VA, and Caelan Cardello, Paramus, on piano; Eoin O’Mara, New York, NY, on guitar; Matt Holmes, Harpers Ferry, WV, on bass; Alberto Oliart, Mexico City, Mexico, on drums; and Dan Neville, Petaluma, CA, on percussion.  

The student ensemble directed by Bill Charlap includes Rayner Perez, Newark, on trombone; Griffin Ross, Hillsborough, NC, on tenor saxophone; James Bally, Elizabeth, on piano; Matt Holmes, Harpers Ferry, WV, on bass, and Alejandro Luna, Etobikoke, Ontario, Canada, on drums.

The student ensemble directed by Vincent Herring includes Isaac Ketter, Fair Lawn, on saxophone; Quintin Harris, Yonkers, NY, on piano; Curren Devico, Chatham, on bass; and Marlen Suero Amparo, Edison, on drums.
