Retumba, a multi-ethnic, all-female Afro-Caribbean dance and percussion ensemble, will perform outside on the Shea Center for Performing Arts Plaza on Monday, September 27 at 5:00 p.m.
The free performance, titled “A Caribbean Journey,” is part of William Paterson University’s Latinidad Heritage Celebration in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Retumba interweaves the dynamic power of Caribbean polyrhythms with the drama and excitement of African dance. Dressed in festive, traditional garb, this seasoned ensemble celebrates traditional Caribbean culture through engaging, staged performances of folkloric music such as guaguancó from Cuba, bomba and plena from Puerto Rico, and merengue from Dominican Republic. The ensemble’s electrifying presentations have been heard throughout the United States for almost 30 years.
The annual Latinidad Heritage Celebration at William Paterson recognizes the contributions and history of Latinas, Latinos, and Latinx people with special events constructed by students, faculty and staff.
Light refreshments will be served for free during the event. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be held in the Shea Center Auditorium.
