Sean Jones, the leading young trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and jazz educator, brings his musical artistry to William Paterson University on Sunday, October 2, 2022 for the opening concert in the fall 2022 Jazz Room series. The concert begins at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus in Wayne, NJ.
Jones has served as lead trumpeter of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a post he held from 2004 until 2010 and as a member of the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, and is currently a member of the SF Jazz Collective, artistic director of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, and artist-in-residence at San Francisco Performances.
As a leader, he has produced and released eight recordings on the Mack Avenue record label, including the 2017 release Sean Jones: Live from Jazz at the Bistro. An in-demand musician, he has performed and/or recorded with Joe Lovano, Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Marcus Miller. He was selected by Miller, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter for their A Tribute to Miles tour in 2011.
Jones, who is an internationally recognized educator, is president of the Jazz Education Network and holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies at John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore. He is the artistic director of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz program.
The concert will be preceded by “Sittin’ In,” the Jazz Room’s accompanying “meet the artist” concert preview featuring interviews with jazz artists and guest speakers. This informal discussion, free to all Jazz Room ticketholders, begins at 3:00 p.m. in the Shea Recital Hall.
William Paterson University’s Jazz Room series is the longest-running program of its kind in the United States. Launched in 1978, the Jazz Room has welcomed more than 500 jazz legends to the stage, including Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Joe Williams, Marian McPartland, Slide Hampton, Kenny Burrell, Joe Lovano, Kenny Garrett, Clark Terry, Michael and Randy Brecker, the Vanguard Orchestra, and more. Concerts have encompassed the entire spectrum of jazz, from early jazz and swing to avant garde, and from intimate solo performances to big bands. The performance series provides support for the University’s internationally renowned Jazz Studies Program, founded in 1973, which draws students from across the United States and abroad under the current direction of pianist Bill Charlap.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for WP faculty, staff, alumni, and senior citizens, $8 for non-WP students, and free for WP students.
