Billboard magazine has placed William Paterson University on its list of “top music business schools” in the nation—recognizing the University’s undergraduate program in music and entertainment industries. This is the fifth time the University has landed on the list, which Billboard has not generated since 2020 prior to the COVID pandemic.
In Billboard’s 2022 spotlight on colleges and universities educating the next generation of music business leaders, William Paterson’s program was noted for the program’s course Personal Management in Music, in which students put the concepts they’ve learned, creativity to data, analytics, and budgeting, to the test in real world situations. The magazine also notes the program’s focus on internships—many students complete three to six—and that it draws faculty who are also artist managers, business managers, and in other executive roles, thanks to the University’s location just 20 miles from New York City.
“We’re excited that Billboard, long regarded as the top music industry trade publication, has recognized our program for a fifth time,” says David Kirk Philp, assistant professor of music and coordinator of the music and entertainment industries program. “The music business changes rapidly, and we work hard to keep up with the trends and provide students with the real world, hands-on experience they need to attain internships and jobs in the industry.”
William Paterson offers a bachelor of music degree with an emphasis in music and entertainment industries, open to students studying classical or jazz performance, as well as a minor in music and entertainment industries open to students from any major. The program is known for bringing exceptional guest speakers into its Music Management Seminar Series; recent speakers have included executives from Warner Music Group, Kobalt Music, Crush Management, Mint Talent Group, and Goldengate Talent Agency. In addition, the highly popular Music Biz 101 & More radio show and podcast, produced by Philp and Dr. Stephen Marcone, William Paterson professor emeritus of music, is the only free advice talk show in America that focuses on the business side of the music & entertainment worlds, with more than 300 episodes available to stream online.
