William Paterson University Named to FirstGen Forward Network for Demonstrated Commitment to Advancing First-Generation College Students’ Success

William Paterson University this week was named to the FirstGen Forward Network, recognizing its demonstrated commitment to improving experiences and advancing success of first-generation college students.

The FirstGen Forward Network—which partners with higher education, business, the public sector, and others to catalyze first-generation student success in education, careers, and life—selects colleges and universities through an application process.

Approximately 40 percent of William Paterson University students are the first in their families to go to college.

“As a proud first-generation college graduate myself, I am pleased that William Paterson is taking this important step in partnering with the FirstGen Forward Network to further strengthen our commitment to this population of students who are changing the social fabric of New Jersey and our nation,” says University President Richard J. Helldobler.

During their first year of active engagement, the colleges and universities selected for the FirstGen Forward Network participate in monthly workshops, networking, and professional development opportunities centered on sharing knowledge and resources tied to first-generation college students’ success.

William Paterson University was among 80 higher education institutions from across the nation that were selected for the Network this year.

"Being named as a FirstGen Forward Network Member is an exciting opportunity for these institutions to join a dedicated community of professionals prepared to share evidence-based practices and resources, troubleshoot challenges, generate knowledge, and continue to advance the success of first-generation students across the country," says Maurice Jones, CEO of FirstGen Forward. "We are excited to see a groundswell of activity from the Class of 2024 Network Members, and, together, we will challenge the nation to ensure first-generation students thrive.”
