INFORMATION FOR
The David and Lorraine Cheng Library officially launched the LEARN (Library Engagement and Research Needs) Badge in September 2023. The LEARN Badge is coordinated by the Library and is included in the WP LEADS (Lead, Engage, Advocate, Develop, Serve) Badge program managed by the Office of Campus Activities, Service, and Leadership. The badge is designed to engage students through supplemental learning activities which support their academic goals and lifelong learning objectives.
The first year of LEARN Badge programming saw great success. The Library offered a total of twenty-five badge programs during the 2023-24 academic year. These programs were presented online, in-person, and in hybrid formats on various topics including: using Library databases, APA formatting, artificial intelligence, reference management tools, voter information, Civic Literacy, film screenings, and more. The badge is structured into four tiers, and students must complete one library program in each tier to complete the badge.
During the first year, 114 students initiated their participation in the LEARN Badge by attending at least one eligible program. The badge is designed to be completed over the course of multiple semesters, however, one enthusiastic graduate student completed the badge in the spring 2024 semester. Abigail Soto (MBA ‘24) completed all four tiers of the LEARN Badge in one semester and was recognized by the Cheng Library faculty and staff in May. Soto was acknowledged for her achievement and successful completion of the first year of LEARN Badge programming.
The Library has expanded its portfolio of LEARN Badge programs and anticipates growth in student participation. The Library looks forward to celebrating with more students as they complete their badge requirements in the 2024-25 academic year.
