This first inaugural conference sponsored by William Paterson University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences focuses on equality and inequality in the United States, with particular attention paid to electoral politics, political movements, and the ideas that animate them. Session I: From the Local to the National: What’s at Stake? This first part of the conference explores what's at stake in the 2012 U.S. elections, from the national to the local. Jeannine Frisby LaRue, senior vice president of Kaufman Zita Group, a public affairs group in New Jersey, and Christine Kelly, professor of political science at William Paterson, lead the discussion. Both are experts in youth participation and New Jersey politics. Dr. Stephen Thompson, professor of philosophy at William Paterson, moderates.
Keynote Address: Linda Martin Alcoff This second part of the conference includes the keynote address given by Linda Martin Alcoff, professor of philosophy at Hunter College and the City University of New York. She is the incoming president of the American Philosophical Association (APA) and author of Visible Identities and Real Knowing. Madhuri Mukherjee, professor of languages and cultures at William Paterson, moderates.
Session II: Prospects for Equality, Justice, and Democracy This third and last part of the conference includes a panel entitled "Prospects for Equality, Justice and Democracy." Speakers include Dorian Warren, professor of political science at Columbia University; Howard McGary, professor of philosophy at Rutgers University; and Kelly Dittmar, research associate at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Maria Kromidas, professor of anthropology at William Paterson, moderates.
