Counseling Center Mission Statement

To reduce psychological symptoms, improve life functioning and well-being

Individual psychotherapy sessions

Reduction in psychological symptoms, improved sense of well-being, improved functioning in several key areas as demonstrated by scores on the Behavioral Health Measure-43 (BHM-43).

Students were asked to complete the BHM-43 at the time of their initial appointment. Students were asked to complete the BHM-43 again once per month for the remainder of the semester (or for as long as they remained in treatment). This provided a method by which to gauge improvement over the course of psychotherapy. For the results of this project, an analysis was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in well-being, symptoms, and life-functioning between the first administration and the last administration.

Well-Being (WB) scale

A significant difference was found between scores on Time 1 (M = 1.67, SD = .91) and Time 2 (M = 2.34, SD = .71), such that scores significantly increased at Time 2, t(30) = -5.22, p < .01, indicating an improvement in reported well-being. This difference is significant at the .01 alpha level (i.e., 99% confidence level). Symptoms (SYM) scale

A significant difference was found between scores on Time 1 (M = 1.22, SD = .66) and Time 2 (M = 0.82, SD = .45), such that scores significantly decreased at Time 2, t(30) = 4.34, p < .01, indicating an alleviation of symptoms. This difference is significant at the .01 alpha level (i.e., 99% confidence level).

Life Functioning (LF) scale

A significant difference was found between scores on Time 1 (M = 1.73, SD = .71) and Time 2 (M = 2.1, SD = .59), such that scores significantly increased at Time 2, t(30) = -3.53, p < .01, indicating an improvement in reported life functioning. This difference is significant at the .01 alpha level (i.e., 99% confidence level).

Psychotherapy is a key component of the services offered in the Counseling Center. Since results of this project suggest that students are experiencing improvement over the course of therapy, future projects will likely assess other areas of service delivery such as outreach efforts.
