Overview

Key Work: Beethoven’s Triple Concerto

The Hobart Trio, a chamber ensemble in residence at William Paterson University, was founded in 2015 and regularly appears on academic and community concert series.  It is comprised of highly accomplished musicians who are on the faculty of WPU:  Kathleen Butler-Hopkins, violin, Joseph Kimura, cello, and Soyeon Park, piano.  Individually, they have performed as soloists and with orchestras on National Public Radio, throughout Europe and the United States, including Alaska's Arctic Chamber Orchestra, the Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall, and on Broadway. The piano trio's repertoire encompasses the classics and works by contemporary composers, including premiere performances of works by Thomas Parente, composer from Westminster Choir College. The Hobart Trio takes its name from the 24th U.S. vice president, Garret A. Hobart, whose former home is a centerpiece on the University's campus.

Kathleen Butler-Hopkins, violin, holds Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University.  She received both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard and attended the Curtis Institute of Music.  Dr. Butler-Hopkins received a summer stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study at Harvard University.  Under the auspices of the Fulbright-Hays Fellowship Program, she completed a year of study at the Vienna State Academy in Austria.  At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, she served as concertmaster and soloist with the Fairbanks Symphony and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra and as a founding member of the Alaska Trio.  Dr. Butler-Hopkins teaches at William Paterson University, is currently a regular faculty member at the Lake Placed Institute Chamber Music Seminar, and was the founder of String Fling, a chamber music program for Alaskan pre-college students.

Joseph Kimura, cello, is a New York based cellist who has been performing and teaching in the tri-state area throughout his career.  He began his studies with Paul Katz and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Channing Robbins and Harvey Shapiro.  He has appeared as a soloist and principal cellist with the Stamford, Hoboken Chamber, Korean, and Gloria Chamber Orchestras and the Orchestra of the State of Mexico.  Mr. Kimura currently performs with the Riverside Symphony, the Masters String Quartet (in residence at Five Town College), and the Hobart Trio.  He also appeared in the Will Rogers Follies and Beauty and the Beast throughout their runs on Broadway.  Mr. Kimura serves on the faculties of Five Towns College and William Paterson University and also teaches at Summer String-In at Monmouth College and the Junior Division of Greenwood Music Camp.

Soyeon Park, piano, earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from Manhattan School of Music where she was the recipient of the Svend Svendsen and Margarethe Svendsen Scholarship and the President’s Award.  Dr. Park teaches at New Jersey City University and William Paterson University and serves as artistic director of Si-Yo Music Society Foundation, a New York based 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational, and cultural institution, which has sponsored her appearances on stage at the Museo del Violino in Cremona, Italy.  Other professional engagements of the past season include a recital and master class with Leon Fleisher in Prague, a recital and master class in Bejing, China, and an artist residency at the Banff Centre, Canada.  In the same season, she won top prizes at the Simon Belsky Piano Competition and the Mieczyslaw Munz Competition.
