Ability of Completers to be Hired in Education Positions

Ability of completers to be hired in education positions for which they have prepared BOTH (Initial & Advanced levels)

Initial Programs

The COE measures the ability of completers to be hired in areas for which they have been prepared through the Full-Time Employment Outcomes (persistence trend and hire rate) section of the NJ EPPR. NOTE: The NJ EPPR does not include novice teachers hired in private, parochial and charter schools nor does it include those hired in other states or as paraprofessionals or aids.

Over the last four years WP graduates trended with the state. In 2020 and 2017, WP graduates were hired at a slightly higher rate than NJ graduates. Below are the results of the WP graduates’ performance compared to the state. The percentage of the WP and NJ graduates who were certified and employed in the endorsement area are:

  • 2020 results: 71% (n=109) of WP graduates and 69% (n=1932) of NJ graduates.
  • 2019 results: 63% (n=136) of WP graduates and 62% (n=1842) of NJ graduates.
  • 2018 results: 55% (n=162) of WP graduates and 62% (n=1791) of NJ graduates.
  • 2017 results: 71% (n=341) of WP graduates and 67% (n=3317) of NJ graduates.

Advanced programs

The hire rates for WP advanced program completers are more challenging to track. The COE collaborates with the NJ DOE to track whether or not WP advanced program completers are hired and working in the position of their additional certification.

Although the COE is able to report on some WP advanced program completers employed in NJ public schools, these data are limited in presenting a full picture of employment.

Issues include: 1) the data obtained from the NJDOE are self-reported by each district), 2) the data do not represent WP advanced completers who moved out-of-state or work in private schools, and 3) the data do not represent the interest of the advanced program completer seeking employment in the additional endorsement area. The data do provide a glimpse into advanced completers who have received an additional endorsement and are employed by a NJ public school.

Below are the percentages of the WP advanced completers who were employed in their area of certification from their advanced program for the last three years:

In 2020-2021: 73%

In 2019-2020: 61%

In 2018-2019: 62%

In 2017-2018: 77%
