Accelerated 4+1 BS/MS Biology:Biotechnology Students in the BS Biology program who have a 3.0 or higher GPA in both the major and overall can enter the accelerated 4+1 BS/MS Biology:Biotechnology program as late as the middle of their junior year (before registration for senior courses). If a transfer student enters the BS Biology program during or at the end of their junior year the GPA from their previous institution(s) will be used to determine eligibility. As seniors, students in the program are required to take three graduate level BIO courses: Molecular Biology (BIO5240; 3cr), and two of the following three courses: Recombinant DNA Technology (BIO5300; 4cr), Cell and Tissue Culture (BIO5310; 4cr), and Genomics and Bioinformatics (BIO5340; 4cr). Students may take a fourth graduate level BIO course, which will only count toward the MS degree. Students will be dropped from the 4+1 pathway if they receive an F in any of the graduate courses taken during their senior year, or if their major or overall GPA falls below 3.0. Students dropped from the 4+1 pathway will be able to complete their BS Biology according to BS program degree policies. Students apply to the MS Biotechnology program during their senior year. The GRE will be waived for BS/MS student entry into the MS program. There is no Thesis option for the accelerated BS/MS program. BIOLOGY BS Requirements General Concentration Upper Level Coursework Select one Plant course: BIO3350, BIO 3610, BIO 3630, or BIO 3650 (3-4cr) Biology Electives: For the accelerated BS/MS, three graduate level courses must be taken to count toward the BS major electives, as directed below: Required: BIO 5240 Molecular Biology (3cr) Take two of the following: BIO 5300 Recombinant DNA Technology (4cr; Spring), BIO 5310 Cell and Tissue Culture (4cr; Spring), BIO5340 Genomics and Bioinformatics (4cr; Spring). BIO 4800 Capstone or BIO 4990 Independent Study (3cr) One additional >5000 BIO course may be taken from the Applied Biotech Lab Classes (4cr) or MS Biotechnology electives (3-4 cr), but the fourth course will only count toward the MS Biotechnology degree. BIOTECHNOLOGY MS REMAINING Requirements NOTES: The remaining requirements below assume only the required three (3) graduate level courses were taken. However, one of the italicized red courses may have been taken at the graduate level as a fourth graduate course while earning the BS degree and already be counted toward the MS degree. If so, one fewer of the requirements shown below will actually remain.
