Dr. Charlene Gungil, DHSc, MPH, MA, BS Major: Community Health Education, Class of 1988 Position: Health Officer and Director of Health Agency: Passaic County Department of Health Dr. Charlene Gungil is a notable professional with expansive public health experience in the State of New Jersey. A 1988 graduate of William Paterson University, Charlene currently serves as County Health Officer and the Director of the Passaic County Department of Health. After graduating from William Paterson, Dr. Gungil continued her education, earning Master of Arts, a Master of Public Health, and eventually a doctorate of Health Science degree. In addition to being a licensed New Jersey Health Officer, Dr. Gungil is also a Registered Environmental Health Specialist. Before she became the chief executive officer at the Passaic County Health department, Dr. Gungil worked in many other capacities, including: Coordinator of Community Health Services at the Bergen County Department of Health Services, Passaic County Public Health Epidemiologist, Assistant Director of the Medical Reserve Corps and Health Inspector and Health Educator of the Westwood Board of Health. Dr. Gungil is a member of five professional associations in the field of public health and is a highly active in community volunteer work. Furthermore, Dr. Gungil has been a highly valued member of the faculty of Public Health at William Paterson University since 1997 as has taught six different courses during her time on our faculty. Based on her outstanding service to the field of public health, the faculty of the Department of Public Health honored Dr. Charlene Gungil as a recipient of its “Distinguished Alumna Award” in May, 2015.
