Rachel Reeves, BS Major: Public Health - General Track, Class of 2015 Position: Environmental, Health, and Safety Specialist Agency: Harris Corporation Graduate Student: MPH in Disaster Management, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine As an environmental, health, and safety specialist, Rachel aims to improve the health and well-being of the working population, with a focus on eliminating hazards through primary and secondary injury prevention measures, industrial hygiene monitoring, health education, ergonomic development, and serving as a first-responder for internal emergencies. Constantly evolving OSHA, RCRA, DOT, and EPA regulations guide all of Rachel’s decisions, so she routinely travels and networks with others to learn about advancements and changes in the field. Rachel also organizes corporate wellness events which include blood pressure and glucose screenings, flu vaccinations, skin cancer screenings, and CPR/AED training. Because public health touches so many different fields, Rachel’s ability to apply epidemiological, policy development, and program planning principles has helped foster her understanding of both occupational health and the business world in general. In addition, her coalition building and community engagement skills have helped me earn the trust of the 1,200 employees whom she serves. Additionally, Rachel is a graduate student in Disaster Management at Tulane University. Her role as a first-responder at Harris has helped her realize that she wants to devote herself to emergency preparedness and management to fulfil her responsibility to keep her employees as safe as possible. She plans to focus her thesis project on hazard mitigation and communication in the industrial work environment. (October, 2015)
