Collections

The Curriculum Materials Center holds a number of specialized collections in support of Education students and faculty. If you need assistance, please ask.

Some education-related materials are held in other parts of the library, based on their format, or relationship to the larger collections:

  • Video materials for gr. 9-12 are located in Media Services. Media for teachers and counselors are is listed in either alphabetical or subject order.
  • Additional books can be either be found in the stacks on the second floor, or in the reference area, or in ebook format.
  • Educational journals are available through the Journals A-Z list page or through databases such as ERIC or ProQuest Education.

Holocaust Education Collection

Resources for teaching about prejudice, genocide and the Holocaust are available. This collection includes juvenile books and videos for K-12.

Juvenile Books, eBooks & Videos

Picture books, fiction and nonfiction for preschool to grade 12 can be found through browsing, reviewing booklists, or by searching the Books & Media tab on the Library Homepage. Children's books and other juvenile materials are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System (which is used in most school and public libraries). Videos and books with CD’s for PreK to 8 are interfiled with juvenile books. All can be borrowed for 28 days.

A small juvenile ebook collection for Kindergarten through grade 5 is available through MackinVia. Purchased through the Connected Library Consortium the titles include fiction and nonfiction. A limited number of titles have text to speech function, and the ability to change background colors and fonts. All titles are included in the Books & Media search on the Library homepage, or you can access the collection directly from the Database list under Ebooks for Kids.

Juvenile Databases

Find informational text for grades 1-12 through these databases of juvenile magazines and reference sources. Many of these databases enable restricting search results by reading level.

STEM Literacy Kits

Through the generosity of the Albert Payson Terhune Foundation the Library purchased over twenty STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) Literacy kits. Aimed at students in grades K to 3 the kits include a children’s book that suggests a STEM activity. One example is the kit for the Three Billy Goats Gruff which includes a story book and materials to build a bridge for the goats. Additional kits explore simple machines, color, and other STEM topics. The kits may be borrowed for 14 days.

Teaching Aids & Reference

Teaching aids are supplemental resources with ideas for lesson plans, teaching activities, bulletin boards and resources.  Reference Books are integrated with teaching aids.  This collection is arranged by Library of Congress (LC) Classification system. Teaching aids may be borrowed for 14 days.

Textbooks (K-12)

Sample textbooks for Kindergarten through grade 12 are available. Textbooks can help identify concepts and teaching strategies that are appropriate for a particular grade level. The textbook collection is arranged by Dewey classification. They are shelved first by subject, then by publisher and grade level. The most current textbooks are for in-library use. Previous editions of textbooks may be borrowed for 14 days.
