William Paterson University’s Center for Chinese Art to Host 2016 Chinese New Year Celebration

William Paterson University’s Center for Chinese Art will host a Chinese New Year celebration to honor the “Year of the Monkey” on February 11 from 3 to 8:30 p.m. at the Power Art Center, 25 Power Ave., on the University’s campus in Wayne. The event will include a lecture, photography exhibitions, traditional Chinese performances of song and dance and a Chinese food banquet. The festivity is free and open to the public.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. with a lecture and presentation “Treasures of the National Museum of China: An Overview and Virtual Tour” Lusheng Chen, deputy director, National Museum of China. Two photography exhibitions will be on display beginning at 4:30 p.m.: “Summer Art in China 2015” by students and faculty of the WP Study Abroad Program and “Ancient Towns of China”by Kemin Dong, director, Chinese Ancient Town Institute, Xian, China. The celebration begins at 5 p.m. with New Year greetings, welcome remarks and student exhibition awards. The finale will showcase a variety of cultural performances from members of the Flushing, N.Y.-based CBA Culture and Arts Center and William Paterson University students. They will demonstrate the Chinese Lion Dance and present the Monkey King performance, a traditional Chinese music ensemble, a male chorus and a hula hoop performance. All festivities will conclude at 8:30 p.m.

The William Paterson Center for Chinese Art coordinated the celebration in conjunction with the University’s Department of Art and College of the Arts and Communication.
