Anat Cohen, the virtuoso clarinetist and saxophonist, performs as part of the Jazz Room Series at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.

Prior to the concert, Cohen will be the guest for “Sittin’ In ,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in Shea Center 101.  Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticket holders. There will be an additional $3 charge for tickets purchased on show day.

Cohen is one of the most in-demand artists on the New York jazz scene.  Her clarinet and saxophone adapt easily to the worlds of swing, jazz, klezmer, Brazilian music, and more. Voted Clarinetist of the Year six years in a row by the Jazz Journalists Association, Cohen consistently tops DownBeat magazine polls in various categories. Her latest CD, Claroscuro, her sixth album as a bandleader, ranges from buoyant dances to darkly lyrical ballads, drawing inspiration from New Orleans and New York, Africa and Brazil.

Born in Tel Aviv and raised in a musical family, Cohen began clarinet studies at age 12 and played jazz on the clarinet for the first time in the Jaffa Conservatory Dixieland band. At 16, she joined the school’s big band and learned to play the tenor saxophone. Through the World Scholarship Tour, Cohen was able to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Launched in 1978, the Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
