William Paterson University to Host 21st Annual Guitarfest on April 30

William Paterson University’s Department of Music will host its 21st annual guitar festival, Guitarfest 2016, on Saturday, April 30, in Shea Center 101 on the University’s campus in Wayne. The day’s events include a concert and master class presented by guitar duo Newman & Oltman.

Admission is $20 for one or more events, and free for William Paterson University students.  The fee for students who wish to participate in the master class is $60.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a performance by William Paterson University guitar students. At 1:30 p.m., Benavides-Galvez Violin/Guitar Duo will present a program of classical music. At 3 p.m., New Jersey’s own master luthier Lubos Naprstek will discuss and present his self-created guitars. Newman & Oltman will conduct a master class from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will perform at 8 p.m.

Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, award-winning performers, have been hailed as a “revelation to hear” by the Washington Post. They have toured in cultural capitals and premiere venues across five of the world’s continents. Newman & Oltman have demonstrated diversity in their collaborations with artists such as composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, fiddler Eileen Ivers, pianist Clarice Assad and violinist Tim Fain. They have served as ensemble-in-residence at New York’s Mannes College, The New School of Music since 1987. Newman serves on the faculty of Mannes College while Oltman serves on the faculties of Princeton University and Lafayette College.
