Veteran jazz vocalist Marlene VerPlanck, a major figure on the New York vocal scene for nearly five decades, will perform as part of the fall 2014 Jazz Room at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center of Performing Arts on campus.

Prior to the concert, VerPlanck will be the guest for “Sittin’ In ,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in Shea Center 101.  Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticket holders. Tickets are available in advance at the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371 or wp-presents.org for $15 general, $12 for senior citizens and William Paterson faculty, staff, and alumni, $8 for non-William Paterson students, and free for William Paterson students with valid I.D. There will be an additional $3 charge for tickets purchased on show day.

VerPlanck’s Jazz Room performance will be a special occasion that features her regular all-star rhythm section, plus a four-saxophone section led by New York master saxophonist Al Regni, in arrangements by the great arranger Billy VerPlanck, Marlene’s husband for 52 years until he died in 2009. Part of the proceeds of this concert will go toward the J. Billy VerPlanck Scholarship Fund for trombonists at William Paterson University.

VerPlanck has maintained a career that features performances of jazz and the American songbook, as well as a significant studio recording career that includes background vocal dates with Frank Sinatra and famous jingles for Campbell’s Soup and Winston. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Michael's Pub and the Rainbow Room, and been profiled on national TV shows, including “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Today Show” and CBS's “Sunday Morning.” She regularly perform across North America and Europe, while a growing roster of solo CDs continues to win critical acclaim.
