William Paterson University Hosts Second Annual New Jersey Social Media Summit on April 8, 2016

Summit for students, scholars and business professionals will explore social media in higher education

William Paterson University will hold its second social media research and practice summit on Friday, April 8 2016, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Commons Ballroom C. Admission is free.

New Jersey Social Media Summit is a day-long event that will bring together scholars, practitioners and students. The theme of the New Jersey Social Media Summit 2016 is Praxis & Publication: Exploring Social Media in Higher Education. The event is sponsored by the MA in Professional Communication Program at William Paterson.  

A prominent panel of social media scholars and professionals will share their findings on the role and impact of social media in higher education; social media pedagogy in higher education; and best social media practices for universities.

Karen Freberg (@kfreberg), PhD, assistant professor in strategic communications at the University of Louisville, will be the keynote speaker.

Freberg’s social media pedagogy practices have been featured in Forbes and in USA Today College publications. She is a research consultant in social media and crisis communications and has worked with several organizations and agencies such as Firestorm Solutions, Hootsuite, DHS, CDC, National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD), and the Colorado Ski Association.

In 2015, Freberg was named as a Plank Educator Fellow where she was able to spend time at General Motors working with them on social media analytics and influencer relations. Freberg’s research has been published in several book chapters and in academic journals such as Public Relations Review, Media Psychology Review, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management and Health Communication. She also serves on the editorial board for Psychology for Popular Media Culture, Corporate Communication: An International Journal, Journal of Public Relations Research, and Case Studies in Strategic Communication (CSSC).

The program includes a keynote address at 10:30 a.m., a networking/social media research poster session from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m., followed by a lunch break, a panel discussion from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., breakout discussion sessions from 2:30 to 3 p.m., and closing remarks/awards from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Panelists include Jaclyn Antonacci, online marketing coordinator at William Paterson University, who will discuss “Social Media for Student Engagement and Community Building,” Mindy Gikas, executive vice president of Porter Novelli, who will speak on the topic, “Next Stop – Pursuing a career in Social Media,” and Ai Zhang, PhD, Stockton University of New Jersey, who will discuss “Social Media Pedagogy in Higher Education.”
