Students in Civic Engagement Class Organize Remembrance Ceremony for Orlando Victims

WP Students in Civic Engagement: Theory and Practice organized rainbow flag ceremony in honor of victims

Rainbow flags bearing the names of the victims of the recent mass shooting in Orlando were placed on the lawn of Shea Center on Monday, June 20 during a remembrance ceremony attended by more than 75 William Paterson University students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

The event, which included a reading of the victims’ names, was organized by students in a class, Civic Engagement: Theory and Practice, taught by Christine Kelly, professor of political science.  The ceremony also included participation from students who are members of the University’s Pride Alliance.  “We wanted to gather to share together as a community and find a way to seek freedom from war, violence, and hatred,” said Kelly.

Miki Cammarata, vice president for student development, thanked Professor Kelly and her class for “raising our consciousness” and providing an opportunity for the campus to gather as a “community of people who care and as a community of learners.”
