Karen Johnson, M.Ed. ’04, Named Passaic County Teacher of the Year by State Johnson wants to help students discover that they can take on a challenge and succeed, if they simply apply themselves. Karen Johnson, M.Ed. '04 Karen Johnson, who earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from William Paterson University in 2004, has been named the 2013-14 Passaic County Teacher of the Year. Johnson was among the county teachers of the year chosen by a countywide panel of administrators, teachers, parents and county education representatives convened by the executive county superintendents of schools. A teacher of German and English at both Macopin School and West Milford High School, Johnson has taught every level of German the district offers as well as media literacy and journalism courses. She also advises, serves as a peer teacher, participates in numerous professional committees, and serves as a district-wide technology leader. As advisor for the school newspaper, Johnson instituted the first electronic edition. In an interview with The Suburban Trends, Johnson said that her main aim in the classroom is to impart linguistic ability to her students. "But more than that, I hope they gain an awareness of the larger world around them, of cultural diversity, and a desire to step into the world beyond our own borders. Most importantly, I hope that I help my students to discover that they can take on a challenge and succeed, if they simply apply themselves. I want them to believe in themselves.
