William Paterson University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare System Offer Children’s Health Series

William Paterson University’s School of Continuing and Professional Education and St. Joseph’s Healthcare System will host a series of four afternoon seminars, It’s All About The Kids, designed for teachers, school nurses, guidance counselors and other educational staff.  Held at the University’s Valley Road campus, at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on four Tuesdays in April, the sessions will include presentations on emotional intelligence, children and stress, and communication disorders, as well as a panel discussion with St. Joseph’s pediatricians.

The first seminar, “EQ vs. IQ: Your Students Are Winners with Emotional Intelligence,” will be held on Tuesday, April 5.  Presented by parent educator Fern Weis, the session will include an overview of the components of emotional intelligence and character development.

The second seminar, “Children and Stress,” will be held on Tuesday, April 12.  Bindu Khanna, MD, a child psychiatrist at St. Joseph’s, will review the common causes of stress in children, identify both the physical and behavioral signs of “stress overload,” and offer age-appropriate strategies to help youngsters manage stress in the school setting.

A panel discussion with St. Joseph’s pediatricians will be offered on Tuesday, April 19.  Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in an open and lively discussion with four pediatricians, discuss their concerns about children’s physical and emotional health, and ask questions related to youngsters’ healthy development and well-being.

“Communications Disorders in Early Childhood,” scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, will be presented by Christine Keeler, PhD, a speech/language pathologist at St. Joseph’s. Dr. Keeler will describe a variety of speech and language disorders that may affect children in grades K-3 and provide classroom strategies for remediation and support.
