William Paterson University to Celebrate Works of Composer Paul Hindemith on March 10

Hindemithon, the 14th annual festival celebrating the life and works of the German composer Paul Hindemith, will be held on March 10, 2016, at William Paterson University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

William Paterson University faculty, students and alumni musicians will perform a wide selection of Hindemith’s works. Performers will include Lisa Pike, horn; Richard Summers, clarinet; Tim Ruedeman, saxophone; and Frank Pavese, piano. Pavese, an adjunct professor of music at William Paterson University, is the founder and artistic director of Hindemithon. In concerts, master classes, lectures, presentations and discussions, the participants will perform and explore the works of the notable Germen composer.

Events will include a 12:30 p.m. concert as part of the University’s Midday Artist Series, a reception with the performing artists at 2 p.m., and an afternoon concert at 3:30 p.m.

Hindemith, who was born in 1895, was a leading exponent of the neoclassic movement. Considered a musical radical as a young man, from the mid-1920s onward he was acknowledged as one of the key modernist composers of the 20th century and as a teacher and theorist whose influence on younger musicians was unmatched.

Contributions to the William Paterson University Music Department Scholarship Fund, which was initiated more than 25 years ago, will be accepted. For additional information on the concert, please contact Frank Pavese at pavesef@wpunj.edu
